Within the VM i want to install esxi as a nested VM in workstation 9 after which within the virtual esxi setup a couple of vms.
HOST(xen/esxi) -> VM(2008r264bit) (call it guest_1) -> workstation9 -> ESXI_vm_1 - > client_vm_11
Is this possible? I tried setting the vhv enable true flag on the guest_1 machine but still I can't boot esxi_vm_1;
Any input?

If the host is Xen, you are probably out of luck. If the host is ESXi 5.1, you need to set vhv.enable=TRUE in the VM configuration file *on the host* for "VM(2008r264bit)." Even then, client_vm_11 is going to have to be pretty small (e.g. MS-DOS) to get it working at multiple levels of nesting.
